S Dungeons and Dragons Online has certainly boomed since they went to a hybrid subscription / free to play business model. This model is particularly suited the DDO game play model given that they are all dungeon based adventures and this new update is smack bang full of the latest dungeon crawls. In a departure from their usual story-heavy adventures though, the Vaults of the Artificers is a challenge system that’s more like mini-games in that you play them over and again for achievements – high scores and the like.

Yes it is true; Dungeons & Dragons Online is bridging Ebberon into one of the most famous D&D settings of all times, The Forgotten Realms. Now the story details are a bit unclear to start, but players will make their way into the Underdark via the first true DDO expansion ever released. The Menace of the Underdark pits players against Lloth and her minions. Not sure who Lloth is? Spider Goddess of the Dark Elves. Lloth has been around D&D for an eternity however she became very popular with the Forgotten Realms series and as Drizzt Do’Urden’s nemesis. So Menace of the Underdark begins a massive shift for DDO into a new realm. With the free to play model boosting the game to new heights it will be great to watch how players react and join the new era for Dungeons & Dragons Online.

The main chunk of content in Menace of the Underdark will be comprised of three new adventure packs: the King's Forest, the Underdark, and the Demonweb. While these adventure packs will be premium content intended for players level 20 or higher (the new cap is 25 in Underdark), you won’t have to be level 20 to begin your adventures in the Forgotten Realms. The ‘Web of Chaos’ storyline introduced today with the launch of Update 13, which serves as a pre-requisite to entering the new Forgotten Realms hub city of Eveningstar, will be available at base level 16. Eveningstar itself will also feature new (scaling) challenge quests for players in the level 15-25 range.
