Vrata se polako otškrinu puštajući prodornu traku svjetlosti u prostoriju utopljenu u mrak.

Kad se mrak povukao otkrio je golemu biblioteku u podrumu male seoske crkvice. Svesci, svici i tomovi prepuni drevnog znanja, a nad njima vonj teškog i staromodnog rada, primitivnih pigmenata, lošeg papira koji se raspadao. Otrov vremena.
- ...kažem, nije uobičajeno, ali pobrinemo se s vremena na vrijeme za sve ovo, pa mora biti nekome od koristi, jel'da? - Reče debeli svećenik gegajući se niz kamene stube u staru arhivu.
- Ma hvala vam, ali ne znam ako će tu biti tako nešto. Ovo mi djeluje prestaro.
- Ne, ne, tu mi stavljamo i novije stvari, ako tu nema, nema nigdje. Znači vama treba samo potvrda rođenja, kada ste ono rekli, tisuću osamsto...?

Svećenik je samo tiho potvrdio i nastavio čeprkati po arhivi, a za to vrijeme, crnokosi posjetitelj prošetao se arhivom. S desne strane ulaza bio je jedan radni stol koji je i sam vidio bolje dane. Čovjek upali lampu iznad stola i zagleda se u stari svezak koji je stajao na stolu. Pored njega bilo je nekoliko novih listova papira i kemijska olovka.
- Samo bih vas molio da ne okrećete stranice na tome jer je stvarno u raspadu - napomene svećenik - Dobro je i potrajala. Datirali su je na rano 12. stoljeće, možda i ranije.
- Ozbiljno? Imate tako stare dokumente? A što je to uopće?
- Crkveni "popis duša". Isto ovo što i vama tražim. Zato sam ga izvadio neki dan da pokušam izvaditi što više imena i podataka. Tu vam se prije sve pisalo, tko se rodio, tko je umro, kako i od čega, kamo su otputovali, i slično. Mislim da je iz jednog sela koje danas više ne postoji, a bilo je tu sjeverozapadno desetak kilometara. Imali su svoju župu i sve.
Čovjek se zagledao u nečitljive popise u originalu, a zatim i u nove bilješke u kojima je svećenik zapisivao sve podatke koje je mogao iščitati o svakom čovjeku. Zadnji nedovršeni je glasio:

- Zar su i ljudi odavde odlazili u križarske ratove?
- Da, kako ne. Dobrovoljci se nisu odbijali. Moglo se dosta zaraditi, i tako. Jeste, ovdje nije baš bilo puno dobrovoljaca, ali izgleda da je Alberto bio jedan od njih. Tko će sada znati što ga natjera da iz ovih krajeva potegne do obale i ukrca se na brod za svetu zemlju.
- A što je ova rečenica tu ispod?
- Nemam pojma tko je to napisao i zašto, to se baš ne poklapa sa uobičajenom formom ovih dokumenata, ali možda znači nešto.
Slova u starom svesku izblijedjela su i pretvorila u obične tragove poteza perom, ali rečenica ispod i dalje se lijepo vidjela.

Bilo je to geslo koje je uvijek ponavljao stari Guido Bertolucci. Dapače, živio je pod njime. Njegovo malo kraljevstvo, kako ga je zvao, bilo je samo stado ovaca, nekoliko pašnjaka i vinograd, ali volio ih je više nego njegov gospodar koji je zakonski posjedovao zemlju. Nije ni čudo da su ga seljani zvali "signor Guido". Nije bio običan priprosti kmet, već čovjek lijepih i mudrih riječi, predan svojoj zemlji, svojoj obitelji i Bogu. Kao da je želio svoj moto dokazati i prvi postaviti temelj tog savršenog života.
Ali nije baš uspio, pomisli Alberto gledajući Giuliu kako umorno leži u postelji. Alberto je bio siguran da je cijeli život živio onako kako ga je otac učio, ali život nije već godinama bio milostiv, a kamoli pravedan.
Nedugo nakon što je naslijedio očevo imanje, supruga mu je iznenada preminula ostavivši ga da se brine za svoju desetogodišnju kćer koja je sada očito isto bila na mukama. Padre Emilio je sjedio pokraj postelje pregledavajući malu i svako malo izrekavši neku kratku molitvu. Kao i sve ostalo, činio je to polako i pedantno dok je Alberta srce stezalo. Konačno je ustao i pridružio se Albertu u suprotnom kutu skromne seoske kućice.
- Com'e', Padre?
- Ne znam, nema nikakve ozbiljne znakove bolesti, ali očito joj nije dobro.
- Da li je možda isti đavo koji je uzeo Cristinu?
- Vaša žena... - zamuca svećenik - mislim da nije imala ovakav umor ili nešto slično, ali ne mogu ovako znati. Trebalo bi bar tjedan dana promatrati kako je, moliti redovito... a mene neće biti sutra, idem u Veneciju, ali mogu pisati nekom drugom župniku da vas posjeti.
Alberto nije ništa odgovorio. Padre Emilio je bio vjerojatno osoba kojoj u životu najviše vjeruje. Napokon, na Guidov nagovor, odlučio je Emilio malog Alberta poučiti čitanju i pisanju, čak i osnovama latinskog. Alberto nije htio prepustiti svoje dijete bilo kojem drugom mišljenju.
- Hoćete li se brzo vratiti?
- Mislim da hoću. Ne bih se trebao zadržavati. Sastat ću se sa biskupom, a onda ćemo izvršiti ceremoniju blagoslova za naše vojnike koji iz Venecije putuju za Svetu Zemlju. To je sve - reče svećenik i krene prema vratima pozdravivši Alberta.

- Padre Emilio! Mogu li ja poći s vama? Pa da i ja krenem za Svetu zemlju?
- Ti? Zašto?
- Pomislih, kćer mi je jedino što mi je ostalo. Ne mogu je izgubiti. Ako krenem u hodočašće, možda se Gospodin konačno smiluje.
- A tko će ti paziti na malu, Alberto? I na blago, ovce?
- Sestra. Već ju je mnogo puta čuvala, sigurno će pristati paziti na nju. Oni ionako nemaju dovoljno stoke, neka imaju i moje stado dok se ne vratim.
- Teška odluka. Naša sveta vojska pazi na hodočasnike, ali neprijatelj je jak i opasan. Dobro razmisli što ćeš, ako je takva tvoja volja, onda pođi sa mnom sutra u zoru - reče Emilio i nastavi svojim putem.
I dok je sunce probijalo jutarnju izmaglicu i tjeralo posljednje trnce hladnoće, Padre Emilio, spreman za put, krenuo je prema kočiji koja ga je čekala. Pored nje stajaše neki neobičan čovjek, sav zakukuljen u vunenu tkaninu sa kožnatom torbom preko ramena. Bio je to Alberto.
- Padre, ho deciso.
