For some reason - maybe it was a drunken stupor - I used the same email address and password for Sony's PSN as I did for XBox Live. Please - I BEG you - read my story and heed it's words.
On Saturday, April 23, the curious emails appeared in my inbox, all of them from MICROSOFT *XBOX LIVE. The first email was a confirmation that my 12 month subscription to XBox Gold was completed. "That's odd", I thought, "Didn't I just renew my Gold subscription in February?" Next was the confirmation of a 4000 point bundle, followed by a confirmation for a 6000 point bundle.
I thought to myself, "Self, did we get drunk and decide to buy a shit-ton of Microsoft points?" Quickly, I scanned the latest DRM to see if perhaps new DLC for Fallout: New Vegas had been released and I was so overcome with joy that I went overboard.
"Nope, Dead Money is still the last DRM available." Another email showed up. This one proclaimed that my point transfer was successful. Apparently, all 10,000 points had been transferred to someone named "CutKinkajou5965".
I called XBox Live support and pleaded my case. I didn't mind that I had 10k points coming to me (My avatar is gonna be PIMP AS FUCK), but I did mind that some unknown person had access to my account.
The helpful folks at XBox Live support took my information and asked the standard series of questions:
"Have you given your password out to anyone?" "No. DUH!" "Do you still have your XBox 360?" "How else am I gonna play Portal 2? OF COURSE I DO!" "Has anyone else had access to your email address and password?" "Of course not! As a matter of fact, I use the same login credentials for PSN."
Then it hit me.
Those FUCKERS.
So here I am. My account is locked down and being poked and prodded by men in scary looking biohazard suits while all I can do is watch through 5 inch safety glass, tears of concern and regret streaming down my face.
