once gaming went mainstream it was doomed.
anything mainstream has to be two things;
1. Cool ; it has to follow trends and be accesible to the average joe simp who can barely work a controller, it also has to be plausible for women/girls to play it. I mean for christ sake we're on Resident Evil 5. Call the game what you want, it's as generic and tired as you want, it does almost nothing new, and it's image and enviorment is so borrowed and unoriginal. Just stick 24 with Black Hawk Down and add zombies.
2. Predictable as fuck ; anything that hasn't been tried and tested isn't worth the millions it would cost to make, especially in this day and age. Hence new ideas are hard to come by, even Mirror's Edge despite being lauded as original, has been done a good few times before with mods for games, and heck even full games like Track and Field shit.
If you want originality, go with indie games. They're better and more original then mainstream stuff. Games like Audiosurf will last longer, and bring something completely new to the table, and on top of that they're a lot cheaper.
I know a lot of people are going to say "oh they're not that bad". But on an artistic level they're a disgrace. As far as gameplay goes, they're average. They provide what would've been an average experience in the 90's and make up for it with impressive visuals.
I think yahtzee says it best. We're not pursuing the next chess anymore, just the next quick fix of goo goo gah oh look Hollywood dribble.
