Just so you know, I'm going to try to refrain from using any clich?d Tom Gun references or talking about the awesome Tom Cruise, Anthony Edwards volleyball scene anywhere in this preview. Moving on, Tom Clancy's HAWX (High Altitude Warfare Experiment) is back! I got the chance to check out an early build of the game at a pre-E3 event last week in Los Angeles and am happy to report that planes are indeed still a big part of the game.
But this time around you aren't confined to simple dogfights and bombing runs while manning the cockpit in your warplane. In HAWX 2 players will be responsible for takeoffs and landings on both air force bases and aircraft carriers. From what I could tell by watching the developers man a takeoff, the process looks to be as simple as accelerating, hitting a certain speed, then pulling up on the left stick to push your plane into the air. I imagine the control mechanic gets a little trickier when you up the difficulty to the realistic setting, but I didn't get a chance to do so.
Other additions include manning a new UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) craft for reconnaissance missions and precision bombing runs that are home to a slightly different control mechanic for bringing the pain from high above. Ubisoft also mentioned mid-air refueling and touted improvements to the dogifghting mechanic, but I didn't get a chance to see them for myself.
The levels that I was shown painted the picture of a world caught in political and military strife. In the first stage of the game, set in the Middle East in the near future, an American base is bombed by an unknown assailant that somehow managed to disable the base's defense systems. Your plane is scrambled into action and it's up to you to rid the sky of the remaining threat. Yes, your plane still has a gazillion missiles on board to go along with standard rockets and guns, all of which can be guided by the Enhanced Reality System that players will remember from the first game. After that first stage, it's up to you and your squadron of fighter pilots to rid the world of this rising threat.
In the way of modes, you can expect to see the return of four-player co-op that will enable you to play all 21 of the game's campaign missions with up to three friends. Not only that, but there will also be a new way to play the campaign missions. No specifics were given, but I'd guess that you'll be able to play through missions from the point of view of the opposition. This will hopefully provide some differentiation from the standard American, British and Russian portions of the core campaign.
From the few missions that I saw, the animations (mainly while still on the ground) need a lot of work. Same goes for the framerate which was very jittery when displaying a lot of ground from high above. Speaking of the earth below, it looks fantastic thanks to the same GeoEye technology that powered the first HAWX. Mountain ranges are very impressive and exhibit some cool depth and shadowing that clearly wouldn't be possible without the aid of GeoEye.
HAWX 2 has a ways to go before it will start impressing people with its gameplay and dogfighting mechanics, but with the impressive amount of planes and both authentic and futuristic military technologies in the game's toolbox, don't shun HAWX 2 just yet. We'll have more on Tom Clancy's latest in the months to come leading up to its fall release date on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC.
