Windows drivers and Seagate hard drives

Seagate hard drives do not require any special drivers for Microsoft Windows operating systems. The generic hard drive driver should support your hard drive. We recommend using the latest Windows Service Pack (SP) updates as these often refresh the Windows drivers. In some cases, Service Pack updates are required to support large capacity drives. For example, starting with Windows XP SP1 and Windows 2000 SP3, support for ATA interface hard drives greater than 137 GB in size was added. See the Microsoft Knowledgebase articles at http://support.microsoft.comSthat explain how to enable large drive support after the Service Packs are installed. For Windows XP SP1, see article Q303013. For Windows 2000 SP3, see article Q305098.

Hard drives are attached to the computer system by either of two different ways: directly to the motherboard or to an add-in PCI host adapter controller card. Motherboards with connections for typical 40-pin parallel ATA (IDE) hard drives usually do not require driver updates unless the drive is greater than 137 GB. Motherboards with built-in Serial ATA or SCSI connectors will likely have a separate set of Windows device drivers. These drivers would be mentioned in the system documentation if available from the manufacturer.

Host bus adapters (a.k.a. controllers) usually do require specific Windows device drivers for the adapter to be seen by the operating system. These drivers are available from the manufacturer. If the host adapter is not recognised by your operating system, then any hard drives connected to that adapter will not be seen by the operating system either. Many popular host adapters are supported by drivers distributed with the operating systems; however, any that were released after the operating system, often require a separate driver update to function properly.

If you are building a new system using a motherboard or PCI adapter card which includes new device drivers, the Windows XP or Windows 2000 operating system installation will pause briefly and ask for you to insert a OEM floppy diskette. This pause for new "SCSI adapter" drivers happens soon after the boot near the beginning of the installation. See your adapter documentation for specifics.

If you are having a problem seeing your hard drive in your operating system, then confirm you have the latest drivers for the host bus adapter.

Here is a list of popular host bus adapters with links to their websites. If the host bus adapter is built on to the motherboard, contact your motherboard manufacturer for drivers.
